Full-Time Senior Utilities Technologist

Job Description

As the Senior Utility Technologist, you will provide expertise in evaluating and assessing development applications with respect to shallow utilities. In this role, the Senior Technologist liaises with internal business units and external interested parties such as developers and engineers to provide subject matter expertise, including interpretation of policies, standards, bylaws, and legislation. In this position you will, take the lead on more complex applications and allocate work to Utilities Planning Specialists, providing day-to-day technical support and quality control. Primary duties include:

  • Reviews and approves reports from developers, utilities or telecoms engineers for shallow utility placement, consulting with partners and other business units.
  • Provide appropriate comments and recommendations within the specifications, guidelines, standards, bylaws, policies, provincial and federal regulations and professional judgment and expertise.
  • Research approved utility rights of way and appropriate use of road right of way reports, plans, and other on-going construction work and developments.
  • Collaborate with other Engineering Technologists, Utilities Specialists, Bylaw and Permit Inspectors to facilitate development to ensure the City’s standards and requirements are met.
  • Review and share information on new subdivision development and joint use trenches; advise of potential build conflicts.
  • Liaises with applicants to ensure utility and road right of way requirements are met while avoiding conflicts.
  • Leads meetings with coworkers, developers, and engineers regarding shallow utility infrastructure issues.
  • Provides expertise to various internal Business Units to assist in negotiating and resolving issues and conflicts.
  • Leads, coaches and trains Utilities Planning Specialists in the duties of the position and new processes.

Qualifications 

  • A completed 2-year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or related discipline with at least 5 years of experience in municipal engineering technology focused on planning, design, construction, placement of shallow utilities, interpretation of construction drawings, bylaws, provincial and federal legislation, specifications, preparation of technical documents, and field inspection.
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) certification with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET) is required.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Microstation and Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook and Excel) would be considered assets.
  • An understanding of the City of Calgary business operations and experience with City Design for Subdivision Services (DGSS), Complete Streets guidelines and other City standards would be an asset.
  • The ability to use discretion to make important decisions is essential.
  • Success in this position requires the ability to engage in long periods of highly sustained attention to detail.

These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
